FEMA Approves $5.6 Million for Cape Coral Hurricane Irma Debris Removal Expenses

Yesterday, FEMA approved reimbursement of $5.6 million for the city’s Hurricane Irma debris removal expenses.

These funds will reimburse the City for a portion of the costs of collection, removal, and disposal of debris following Irma. City crews and contractors collected more than 318,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris and more than 22,000 cubic yards of construction/demolition debris following the storm.

Mayor Joe Coviello stated, “This is the first major reimbursement to Cape Coral for our Hurricane Irma cleanup expenses. We should receive additional reimbursement money in the future. I thank FEMA for awarding these funds and also thank our federal and state partners for assisting in this process.”

It may be several months before the City receives the approved funds. To date, the City has received about $126,000 in reimbursements. FEMA claims from the City of Cape Coral total about $18.1 million, of which $13.1 million are for debris removal.
