This week, crews began constructing sidewalk curb ramps near recently resurfaced roadways throughout the city. About 145 concrete curb ramps are being replaced with ADA-complaint ramps and detectable warning surfaces. Crews began ramp work at SE 16th Place and SE 2nd Street.
Sidewalks leading up to each of the curb ramps will be closed during and immediately following construction to allow new concrete to cure. Pedestrian detours will be established as necessary, and interruptions to vehicular traffic will be minimal. There may be temporary lane shifts or flaggers in some areas. Construction of each new ramp is expected to take 2-3 days to complete. All barricades and other devices will be removed when work is finished.
A curb ramp provides an accessible route for people with disabilities and enables the safe transition from a roadway to a curbed sidewalk and vice versa. For pedestrians who are blind or have low vision, the detectable warning surfaces indicate the boundary between a pedestrian route and a vehicle route.
A map is attached indicating the areas where sidewalk curb ramp improvements are being made.
