Hit and Run Investigation

On Monday, March 11, 2019, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a hit and run crash with injuries. The crash occurred at the intersection of Pine Island Road and North Tamiami Trail in North Fort Myers. Due to the nature of the incident, a Traffic Unit deputy responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

The investigation revealed that a Harley Davidson Motorcycle was traveling east bound on Pine Island Road when it entered the intersection and struck a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the intersection. Witnesses stated that the vehicle, an older model gray or silver four-door sedan (Chevrolet or Toyota), was traveling southbound on North Tamiami Trail and was stopped in the intersection on a red light when the motorcycle entered the intersection on a green light and struck the vehicle.

After impact, the vehicle fled the scene with its bumper hanging off. One of the witnesses followed the vehicle but was unable to get a tag number due to the bumper hanging off. The witness lost sight of the vehicle after it made a left turn onto a side street from River Road, just south of Pondella Road.

The motorcyclist was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with a serious but non-life threatening leg injury. The driver of the vehicle will be found at fault for the crash for stopping and blocking an intersection. To this point, the driver has not yet been located.

Anyone who may have information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 239-477-1000.
