Quick Reads for July

End Alzheimer’s – Dale E. Bredesen. A challenging read with a lot of medical terms equal to a college-level textbook. His ReCode program requires an exquisite diet with a lot of supplements, plus an exercise & sleep program. He claims to have reversed over 500 cases of advanced Alzheimer’s. **

Political Risk – Condoleeza Rice & Amy B. Zegart. Two Stanford college professors wrote this book based on the courses that teach MBA students about how businesses & organizations can anticipate global security. Examples are Fed-EX, B.P., Johnson & Johnson, Sony, NASA, – aircraft carriers, earthquakes, terrorist, etc. ***

Our 50 State Border Crisis – Howard G. Buffett. (Warren’s son) A very serious book about our immigration problems. His foundations have used over 3 BILLION $ to help poverty victims & help governments & law enforcement improvements in 150 countries. *****

Happiness Curve – Jonathan Rauch. Why life gets better after 50. Worldwide research shows a “happiness curve” that starts high in people’s 20’s, declines until about 45 & gets higher from the early 50’s throughout the rest of your life. **

In The Enemy’s House – Howard Blum. An interesting book about how the FBI finally broke the Russian codes & found their spies (too late.) They stole our atomic bomb secrets. ***

A Spy Named Orphan – Roland Philipps. While a tough read, this is a complete history of 40 & 50’s spies known as the Cambridge (England) 5. Donald Maclean was in US State Dept with clearance for FBI & CIA files, and this book is mostly about him, with a side story about Kim Philby, Guy Burgess & Anthony Blunt. All were spying for Russia. **

Rocket Billionaires – Tim Fernholz. A fascinating book about Elon Musk & Jeff Bezos spending billions of dollars to fly rockets into space. They are competing with Boeing & Lockheed/Martin & launching spacecraft at 1/3rd or less of the cost of the BIG boys. *****

An American Family – Khizr Khan. Well written interesting story about a Pakistani man who immigrated to the US with his family. The last chapter gets political – he spoke at the Democratic convention supporting Hillary. ****

With The End In Mind – Kathryn Mannix. A doctor who specializes in palliative care & hospice care gives many examples of dying in a more humane way than prolonging suffering with a terminal prognosis. ***

Going Deep – Lawrence Goldstone. The history of the first submarines being built and the men behind the companies that made them. Quite interesting in that the 1st successful company (Electric Boat) is still a major supplier of subs as a division of General Dynamics. ***

Trump’s War – Michael Savage. Author is an extreme right talk radio guy, but this book is a very reasoned synopsis of the battle (war) Trump faces to start to clean the swamp and get what would seem to be “common sense” spending controls passed through Congress. ****
