“Sloughbration” event to celebrate 20 years with free activities

Mark your calendar now for the Friends of Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve’s celebrating their 20th Anniversary with a “Sloughbration.”

The fun will happen at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, 7751 Penzance Road, Fort Myers, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4.

This free event that celebrates 20 years of protecting the slough offers educational opportunities for all ages. Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve is a Lee County Parks & Recreation site.

Free parking is available at the nearby Lee County Sports Complex, 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway. A free continuous shuttle will take attendees to and from the slough. No public parking will be available at the Slough on the event day. A Spanish translator will be available at the Welcome Area throughout the event.

Activities, displays and presenters include:

  • Guided walks
  • Bird walks
  • Interactive demonstrations including butterflies, birds, reptiles, insects, mammals, skulls, plants, basket weaving and sensory exploration
  • Adam’s Animal Encounters
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Panther Outreach
  • Florida Gulf Coast University Water School
  • Lee County Mosquito Control District
  • Lee County School District Environmental Education
  • Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve
  • CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation Of Wildlife)
  • Randell Research Center
  • En plein air artists from Fort Myers Beach Art Alliance
  • Children’s scavenger hunt
  • Silent auction, including items donated by photographer Clyde Butcher
  • Music by The Florida Keys from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Great Blue Heron pavilion

Food vendors include:

  • Brew Box Coffee Company
  • Nelson’s Port-a-Pit
  • Red Roc Cravings
  • Belgian Yummies Ice Cream

A commemorative t-shirt will be available for purchase. It features the “Sloughbration” logo by a 2021 summer camp attendee. The image depicts a pond in the slough with an alligator and a turtle sunning themselves. All proceeds from the sale of t-shirts go to the Friends’ mission to protect, preserve and promote the slough.
