Through hard work and partnerships, the Cape Coral Police Department has obtained a valuable technology asset able to significantly assist and speed up crime scene and crash investigations.

For the last four years, Master Sergeant James Lear and Brian Raimondo from the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) worked together to obtain a 3D laser scanner (the Leica RTC360 Laser Scanner) via a government funding pass-through agreement.

This state-of-the-art tool will be able to perform a wide variety of critical functions in many areas of the police department.

Chief among these benefits will be the ability to clear and open roadways after major (non-criminal) crash investigations.

The scanner can document and capture an environment in 3D point clouds (2 million points per second), and it captures these scans, including enriching High-Dynamic Range (HDR) imagery, in less than two minutes per scan.

This drastically increases productivity and the speed of these investigations, allowing roadways to be re-opened much faster.

Other anticipated benefits of the Leica RTC360 Laser Scanner include:

  • Reducing the road closure time by hours on criminal major crash investigations
  • Assisting the Investigative Services Bureau when needed to scan crime scenes (eliminating the need to wait for FDLE, which can be time-consuming)
  • Assisting the Professional Standards Bureau with officer-involved shootings if needed
  • Assisting the Community Services Bureau in eventually scanning schools for emergency response and have scans available for the response team commander

The Cape Coral Police Department is extremely fortunate to have obtained this piece of technology, and we’re excited to pass its benefits on to the citizens we serve.
