Police Athletic League Announces First Recipient of “Captain Mike Urraro Memorial Scholarship”

The Cape Coral Police Athletic League is proud to announce the first recipient of the “Captain Mike Urraro Memorial Scholarship”, who this past weekend ran football drills with Captain Urraro’s sons.

Nine year old Anthony Green will be playing football for the Storms football program, the same program “Coach Mike” dedicated so many years of his life to coaching and mentoring Cape Coral youth. When the scholarship was announced, Captain Urraro’s sons Justen and Hunter were eager to meet Anthony, take him out for lunch and to run some football drills with him at the once-Storms Field, which is now known as “Michael Urraro Field.”

Justen Urraro, who traveled all the way from his home in St. Augustine, said the scholarship program was a great honor for his father. Coach Mike Urraro in his lifetime did so much for countless children who played youth football, mentoring them not only in sports, but in life lessons and in giving back to the community. The Police Athletic League scholarship that bears his name helps these lessons and Coach Mike’s legacy to continue on.

School Resource Officer and Police Athletic League director Coby Palmer stressed the importance of the kids like Anthony who will be receiving these scholarships in the future. “Not only do we want to be providing these kids with opportunities to participate in sports that they might not have had otherwise, the idea is to care for, mentor and follow them to ensure they are on a happy, healthy path.”
