Local Car Thief Arrested in Broward County After Traffic Crash

On May 26, 2019, at around 8:00 a.m., Cape Coral Police responded to a call for service at SW 1st Place in reference to a Motor Vehicle Theft.

The victim advised that his 2015 Honda Civic had been stolen overnight by an unknown individual (s). The Honda was parked in his driveway the night before at about 8:30 P.M. The owner discovered it missing at around 7:30 A.M. The Victim said he had possibly left the vehicle unlocked and his spare key inside the center compartment.

Prior to the Honda being entered as stolen, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) had located the vehicle in Broward County.

Detective Costa, of the Property Crimes Unit, was assigned the case. Based on investigative techniques and evidence, Detective Costa developed probable cause to arrest Jose Luis Borrego (W/M, DOB: 8/08/2001, 640 NE 2ND AVE) for grand theft auto. Borrego was transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Lee County.
