The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has reported Blue-Green algal blooms in Lake Okeechobee. In an abundance of caution, the City of Cape Coral will activate its bubble curtains within the next few weeks.
Bubble curtains are comprised of diffuser plates placed on the bottom of canals that produce a “wall” of air bubbles to help prevent toxic algae from entering. To report algae concerns, submit a ticket to 311 using the Cape Coral phone app.
Once in the app, select “Report an Issue” and choose “Algal Bloom/Red Tide.” Input your information, select the location, and snap a photo. Residents can email 311@capecoral.gov to report algae concerns or report blooms through FDEP.
Keep in mind that freshwater canals are still vulnerable to Blue-Green algae. Follow Cape Coral’s Fertilizer Ordinance to reduce excess nutrients and help keep our waterways clean.
