A traffic stop resulted in the arrest of two men, one of which wound up facing charges for being armed with a large hatchet.
On June 19th, 2021 at around 8:50 p.m., a CCPD Patrol officer was notified by Dispatch of a license plate reader hit on a stolen license plate possibly headed toward his location at Surfside Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway. The officer observed traffic and spotted the vehicle in question, pulling it over at the 2000 block of Veterans Memorial Parkway.
The officer made contact with the occupants, Bernard Prescott (W/M, DOB: 5-27-77) and Christopher Prince (W/M, DOB: 4-10-84). The officer’s subsequent investigation showed an active warrant for Prescott for failing to appear on a suspended license and also for the license plate theft.
The unregistered vehicle required towing, and the officer asked the passenger Prince to exit the car. When he did, the officer observed a large hatchet with a tape-wrapped handle between the door and Prince’s seat, as well as a cut straw with white residue on the floorboard. The subsequent search of Prince turned up a black pouch with another cut straw and seven grams of methamphetamine. Prince was also found to be a previously convicted felon.
Bernard Prescott was placed under arrest on his active warrant as well as for petit theft, while Prince was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, unlicensed carrying of a concealed weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon as a convicted felon. Both were transported to the Lee County Jail.
