Serious Crash Leaves Bicyclist With Life-Threatening Injuries

The Cape Coral Police Department responded to a serious crash with injuries this morning around 7 a.m., at the 2600 block of Old Burnt Store Road. Due to the severity of the crash, Traffic Homicide investigators with the department’s Traffic Unit conducted the investigation. A Ping4alert was sent warning area residents.

VEHICLE 1: Red 2001 BMW 325CI, Florida tag, driven by Timothy Richard Gray Allen, DOB: 11-26-71, of Cape Coral. Allen suffered minor injuries in the crash.

PEDESTRIAN 1 (Bicyclist): Juliet Kim, DOB: 5-10-47, of Cape Coral, suffered serious life-threatening injuries in the crash.

SYNOPSIS:

NOT ACTUAL VEHICLE, USED FOR IDENTIICATION PURPOSES ONLY

Vehicle 1 was traveling northbound on Old Burnt Store Rd N in the northbound travel lane (two-lane/two-way road) at the 2600 block.

Pedestrian 1 (Bicyclist) was riding her bicycle northbound in the northbound travel lane on the right side of the travel lane. The bicycle was equipped with a front white light and a rear blinking red light. Additionally the road was lit as the sun was rising (7:08 am). Pedestrian 1 was not wearing a helmet.

The front bumper of Vehicle 1 struck the rear of the bicycle. The impact launched the bicycle approximately 138 feet north from the point of impact. Pedestrian 1 was thrown back onto the hood of Vehicle 1.

Vehicle 1’s driver swerved to the left in reaction to the impact and lost control and began slide sideways across the southbound travel lane and exited the roadway to the left while still sliding sideways.

Pedestrian 1 was separated from Vehicle 1 and came to final rest in the southbound travel lane approximately 175 feet from the point of impact.

Vehicle 1 entered the front yard of 2604 Old Burnt Store Rd N while still sliding sideways. Vehicle 1 continued sliding until the right wheels of Vehicle 1 got caught in the grass as the front swale in the yard began to elevate. Vehicle 1 then began to roll on its right side and completed 3/4 of a roll and came to final rest in the front yard on its driver side (left side).

The driver was assisted out the vehicle by CCFD Firefighters and sustained minor injuries from the crash.  Pedestrian 1 sustained serious life threatening injuries and was air lifted by helicopter to Lee Memorial as a trauma alert and remains in critical condition.   

Traffic Homicide Investigator J. Barkley responded along with Master Corporal Cantrell who assisted with the investigation. DRE Lt. Kolak also responded, along with Forensic Tech L. Lansky, and VA. C. Seymour. FDLE also responded to assist with a laser imaging scan of the crash scene.

Alcohol/drugs ARE afactor in this traffic crash. Speed IS NOT a factor in this traffic crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.
