Four brave officers of the Cape Coral Police Department were issued the Meritorious Service Award yesterday by Chief Anthony Sizemore, for their heroic efforts on a tragic November 2020 call.

The Meritorious Service Award is awarded to a member of the Department for exceptional performance of duty to include extraordinary acts of courage or actions that bring great credit upon the Police Department, and/or the police profession and/or recipient through devotion to duty or service to the public on or off-duty.

On November 25th, 2020 at around 11:55 p.m. officers responded to the 3100 block of NE 6th Avenue for a crash with a car in a canal with two children trapped inside. When officers arrived, the vehicle was already totally submerged.

Officers Brandon Sancho, Nicholas Isaacs, Ronny Greenup and Dragoslav Maksimovic entered the canal in an attempt to free the children without regard for their own safety. With the assistance of the Cape Coral Fire Department, one child was pulled from the vehicle, with the other child removed shortly after.

Both children were transported to the hospital, but sadly passed away. The officers nonetheless bravely tried to save the children, setting themselves apart by their extraordinary act of courage.
