Morning Traffic Crash On Burnt Store Road Results In Two Fatalities

Yesterday, Burnt Store Road was shut down for hours as the Cape Coral Police Department investigated a traffic accident resulting in 2 fatalities.

VEHICLE 1: White 2001 Mack, dump truck, Florida tag. Driver Christopher A Abdill, W/M, of Ft Myers, was not injured in the crash.

VEHICLE 2: Red 2018 Mazda CX5, SUV, Florida tag. Driver Joseph E. Voll, W/M, and passenger Sue Ellen Voll, W/F, both of Punta Gorda, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Vehicle 1 was traveling north on Burnt Store Rd N approaching the intersection with Caloosa Pkwy. Vehicle 1 was traveling north behind another unidentified dump truck. Vehicle 1 was loaded with loose rocks and dirt picked up at a nearby roadway construction area.

Vehicle 2 was traveling south on Burnt Store Rd N approaching the intersection with Caloosa Pkwy.

A northbound vehicle ahead of Vehicle 1 stopped in the roadway waiting for Vehicle 2 to pass south before turning left (west) onto Caloosa Pkwy and the unidentified dump truck in front of Vehicle 1 also slowed to a stop.

The driver of Vehicle 1 attempted to stop before colliding with the rear of the unidentified dump truck. In doing so, he steered to the left, crossed the center line, and traveled diagonally to the north in the south lanes of Burnt Store Rd. Vehicle 1 exited the west edge of the roadway where the left side of its front bumper collided with the front left portion of Vehicle 2 causing deep intrusion into the passenger compartment.

After colliding with Vehicle 2, Vehicle 1 continued to travel approximately 70 feet from the roadway edge and came to final rest facing west immediately south of Caloosa Pkwy. The impact with Vehicle 1 forced Vehicle 2 to rotate perpendicular to the roadway and it came to final rest facing west immediately south of Vehicle 1.

The driver of Vehicle 1 was not injured in the crash. The driver and passenger of Vehicle 2 died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Traffic Homicide Investigators D. Gray and C. Mills, and Forensic Technician A. Shober, responded to the scene. FHP Sergeant B. Everett (Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspector) responded and conducted an inspection of Vehicle 1. Victims Advocate C. Seymour was notified.

Alcohol/drugs ARE NOT a factor in the traffic crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified. Burnt Store Rd N was closed for more than 7 hours.
