On February 16, 2019, around 7:30 AM, Cape Coral Police responded to a call for service at 1821 NW 1st PL in reference to a motor vehicle theft.
The first arriving officer made contact with the victim who stated that his 2010 white Chevy Silverado was stolen from his driveway overnight. Detective Costa from the Property Crimes Unit was assigned the case for further investigation.
On February 18, 2019, information was obtained that Gavin Gregory Lloyd (W/M, DOB: 12/23/2001, 126 NE 24th Ter) was the person who stole the white Silverado pickup truck and was driving it around but he was unable to be located.
On February 19, 2019, around 7:44 PM, officers attempted to make contact with Lloyd who was driving the Silverado pickup truck in a neighborhood. Officer Leonard pulled up behind the Silverado and turned on the patrol vehicle overhead emergency lights. Lloyd refused to obey commands and accelerated through the front yard of the residence and turned to go in between two houses. Lloyd fled the area in the vehicle and Officers were unable to locate him nor the stolen Silverado pickup truck.
On February 22, 2019, around 2:37 PM, Cape Coral Police Officers responded to the 100-block of Diplomat Pkwy E in reference to a recovered stolen vehicle.
The victim was driving westbound on Diplomat Pkwy when he noticed his stolen Silverado truck parked on the side of the road. The victim approached his vehicle and found Lloyd sitting inside. The victim confronted Lloyd and a confrontation between the two of them ensued. During their altercation, Lloyd reached into his pant leg and pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun. Lloyd then worked the slide on the firearm chambering a round and pointed it at the victim. The victim backed up to avoid further confrontation due to being in fear for his life.
A short time later, Lloyd took off running from the scene. Several Cape Coral Police Officers responded to the area and located Lloyd swimming in a canal at about the 200-block of NE 15th Ter. Officers gave Lloyd several loud commands for him to give up, however, Lloyd refused to comply with their commands and continued swimming across the canal (away from Officers) and up an embankment out of their sight. Lloyd was ultimately located hiding on the side of a residence in a bush (323 NE 15th ST) and taken into custody. A baggie of cannabis was also found that Lloyd attempted to discard. The Sig Sauer handgun was located inside of a recycle bin and recovered.
Lloyd was charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Person Under the Age of 18, Resisting a Law Enforcement Officer Without Violence, and Possession of Cannabis Under 20 grams.
Lloyd was later transferred to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
