Traffic Stop and K9 Alert Leads to Locating a Stolen Firearm

On February 9, 2019, at approximately 7:23 PM, Officer Ashley Carvalho conducted a traffic stop at the 3300-block of Chiquita Boulevard S for a vehicle traveling 57-mph in a posted 45-mph zone.

The passenger was Clintton Johnson (B/M, DOB: 08/07/1990, Transient.) K9 Officer Aponte arrived as a backup officer and K9 Xander conducted an open-air sniff on the vehicle. K9 Xander gave a positive alert to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, a small amount of marijuana was located in the center console (arm rest) of the vehicle. In addition to the marijuana, a Heritage Rough Rider Revolver 22 caliber, was located inside the vehicle along with ammunition.

A records check on the firearm revealed that it had been stolen from ‘Cape Guns’ in 2018.

Clintton was also found to be a convicted felon. The investigation concluded that Clintton knowingly possessed both a firearm an ammunition after being a convicted felon and he had no intentions on reporting the description and location of the the stolen property to law enforcement.

Clintton was charged with 2-counts of Possession of a Firearm /Ammunition by a Convicted Felon, Grand Theft of a Firearm, and Failure to Report Lost or Abandoned Property.

Clintton was transferred to Lee County Jail.
