Multi-agency collaboration leads to narcotics arrest

On January 8, 2019, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Highway Interdiction Unit, the Cape Coral Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspector completed a month-long joint investigation in reference to an increase in suspicious packages being delivered to Lee County.

Upon arrival, detectives utilized their K9 partners to conduct a free air sniff of the packages, who subsequently indicated the odor of narcotics. The packages found were addressed to Jason Scott Smith (DOB 05/10/1972) of Cape Coral, FL.

During the investigation, detectives learned that Jason Smith and his wife, Karea Michelle Smith (DOB 11/06/1971), were both involved in illegal narcotic activity throughout Lee County.  As a result, multiple search warrants were authored and executed at several locations that were believed to be utilized by the Smith’s.

These locations were used to store, package, and distribute these illegal drugs. In total, detectives seized $13,942 in U.S. currency, a 2017 Toyota Tundra, over 35 pounds of raw marijuana, 487 grams of THC wax, 186 grams of THC infused edibles, 110 grams of mushrooms, 1,057 grams of THC oil and multiple drug paraphernalia items.

At the conclusion of the investigation, detectives arrested both Jason Smith and Karea Smith on multiple Marijuana charges to include trafficking, smuggling, and distribution.

This joint operation between the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Cape Coral Police Department, and the U.S. Postal Inspector provide an example of the dedication and teamwork shared amongst the law enforcement agencies within Lee County.
