FGCU HOLDS HIGH SCHOOL ETHICS CASE COMPETITION

Florida Gulf Coast University’s (FGCU) Lutgert College of Business held its second annual high school ethics case competition recently. Uncommon Friends Foundation and Lee County Schools sponsored the event, and high school students from throughout Southwest Florida attended.

Brian Rist of Storm Smart Industries served as the keynote speaker, and Uncommon Friends Foundation President Helena Dabrowski and Jennifer Nelson, executive director, delivered closing remarks.

Dr. Eric B. Dent, Florida Gulf Coast University’s Uncommon Friends endowed chair professor of ethics, selected a case in which students were faced with a real-life ethical temptation of a company executive considering whether or not to make a slight change in the timing of revenue recognition in order to receive a bonus for herself and division employees.

The two winning teams consisted of students from Cape Coral High School, Crosspointe Academy, Fort Myers High School, Florida Southwest Collegiate High School, home-schooled students, and members of the TrailBlazer 4H Club.

Uncommon Friends Foundation board member Caryn Smith and FGCU professor Annie Stout facilitated the winning teams. Rist distributed four $500 scholarships at the competition to students selected randomly by drawing.

Students interested in participating in the FGCU ethics competition to be held in 2019 should contact Dent at edent@fgcu.edu as soon as possible.
