Do The Right Thing for March 2017

The “Do The Right Thing” ceremony for March 2017 was held Wednesday, March 15th in City Council Chambers. This ceremony is always held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, is open to the public, and the community is encouraged each month to come out and show their support to these outstanding young men and women who “did the right thing.” School Board District 1 Chairman Mary Fischer was the guest speaker.

Eleven (11) Cape Coral students were recognized.

Lidia Agostinelli – 3rd Grade at Christa McAuliffe Charter Elementary School

Lidia wanted to help koalas in Australia because they are her favorite animal and are suffering from habitat loss.  Lidia made cute little koala ornaments and has been selling them in school to raise money for a foundation that she has started called “Care For Koalas.”

Baley McFarland – 1st Grade at Patriot Elementary School

Baley is a first grade student who shows character that is beyond her age. She spends her recess time with the life skills and functional skills students and is always willing to help. She even goes the extra step to defend them when other students are being disrespectful towards them.

Jason Madrigal – 7th Grade at Caloosa Middle School
Cameron Zohler – 7th Grade at Caloosa Middle School

Jason and Cameron were at a store and observed a woman putting air in her tire. The woman showed signs of confusion, dizziness and weakness. The students informed the store manager who immediately called EMS. When EMS arrived, they stated that the woman had had a diabetic attack and needed to be transported to the hospital.

Alexandra Rodriguez – 7th Grade at Challenger Middle School

Alexandra is always quick to volunteer to help with whatever is needed.  During a musical production last year, Alexandra helped with painting the sets and various other tasks. Recently a new foreign student, who spoke very little English, joined the class.  Alexandra sat with her and helped her communicate.

Makayla Smith – 6th Grade at Challenger Middle School
Thalia De La Cari Mora – 6th Grade at Challenger Middle School

Makayla and Thalia stood up for and defended a disabled student who was being bullied at the bus stop.  A 7th grade girl was calling him names and kicking him in the ribs and chest. The two girls yelled at the bully to stop, and ignored the bully’s verbal abuse and insults.

Christian Lubrun – 9th Grade at Ida Baker High School

An expensive cell phone was accidentally left behind in a room. Christian found the phone and was able to determine who the owner was.  The phone was returned to the owner who was very happy and thankful for Christian’s action.

Olivia Morris – 8th Grade at Challenger Middle School
Skyler Bacha – 8th Grade at Challenger Middle School

Breanna Stafford – 8th Grade at Challenger Middle School

Olivia, Skyler and Breanna volunteer at Patriot Elementary as mentors.  One day they walked into class and a student was having a seizure.  They asked the teacher what they could do to assist.  The three made sure the other students kept calm, were seated and occupied while the nurses and administration helped the child.
