Disabled Man Has Van Vandalized and Burglarized

Man uses brick paver to smash in the windshield of a disabled man’s van.

On January 5, 2019, around 12:59 AM, Cape Coral Police responded to a call for service at 802 El Dorado Parkway E in reference to a report of a white male actively attempting to break the windshield of a van not belonging to him. The witness called and described the male that was smashing the windshield of the van to police.

Upon the arrival of officers, a white male was seen sitting in the driver’s seat of a red Dodge Caravan that was parked in the driveway of the home. While approaching the van the officers could see extensive damage to the windshield and body of the van. The male, Demetre Jon Gatteny (W/M, DOB: 06/11/1998, 5603 Deauville Ct), was given verbal commands to exit the drivers seat and was immediately detained.

A brick paver was lying within one foot of the van’s driver’s side door. The brick paver appeared to have been removed from an island in the front yard of the home. The entire front windshield of the van was shattered and nearly caved in rendering it undrivable. Damage was observed on the roof and hood of the van and shattered glass from the windshield was inside of the van. A black wheelchair belonging to the victim that had been inside of the van was now in the front yard.

Demetre Jon Gatteny was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Conveyance and Criminal Mischief with Property Damage $1000 dollars or more.

Gatteny was later transferred to the Lee County Jail.
