Morning Crash Results in One Fatality

Cape Coral Police are investigating a fatal crash that left one deceased.

On October 1, 2018, around 7:00 AM, Cape Coral Police responded to a call for service in reference to a two-vehicle crash at the 1200 block of SW Pine Island RD.

There was one fatality and no other injuries. A Major Crash Investigator, Victim Advocate, Forensics, and a Drug Recognition Expert responded to assist with this investigation. A Ping4alerts! was sent, warning drivers and residents of the traffic hazard.

The preliminary synopsis of the Major Crash Investigator is below:

TIME:  6:57 AM

LOCATION: SW Pine Island Road/SW 12th Avenue

CR#:  18-018894

VEHICLE 1: Grey 2013 Nissan Altima, four-door car, Florida tag# HAXN40.

DRIVER 1: John Robert Jones Jr, W/M, 08/29/1978, of Cape Coral, FL.

DRIVER 1 INJURIES: John Jones suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

VEHICLE 2: White 2017 Freightliner semi-truck, Florida tag # ATXX70.

VEHICLE 2 TRAILER: White tanker semi-trailer, Florida tag # 8950CJ.

DRIVER 2: Jose L. Orengo, W/M, 06/18/1988, of Ft Pierce, FL.

DRIVER 2 INJURIES: Orengo was not injured in the crash. 

SYNOPSIS:

Vehicle 1 was traveling eastbound on SW Pine Island Road, in the outside lane, approaching the intersection with SW 12th Avenue. Vehicle 1 was behind Vehicle 2.

Vehicle 2 was a semi-tractor pulling a tanker type trailer carrying liquid chlorine. It was traveling eastbound on SW Pine Island Road, in the outside lane, approaching the intersection with SW 12th Avenue. Vehicle 2 slowed to turn right onto SW 12th Avenue. The front of Vehicle 1 collided with the rear of Vehicle 2.

The driver of Vehicle 1, who was not wearing a seat belt, was trauma alerted to the Cape Coral Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of Vehicle 2 was not injured. 

A Florida Highway Patrol Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Trooper also assisted the investigation.  SW Pine Island Road and SW 12th Ave were closed down for approximately 7 hours.

Alcohol/drugs ARE NOT a factor in the traffic crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.
