The City of Cape Coral will donate a fossil bone to the Cape Coral Historical Museum during a reception on Thursday, September 6.
The event is hosted by the Cape Coral Historical Society and will take place at the Museum, which is located at 544 Cultural Park Boulevard.
The museum opens at 10 am, the reception begins at 11 am and is open to the public.
The fossil bone belonging to a mammoth or mastodon was discovered during the City’s North 2 utilities extension project. The bone fragment came from the upper bone of a trunked animal’s front leg. The bone was found about 17 feet underground. A field assessment of the discovery estimates that the bone could be 12,000 to 2.5 million years old.
