Cape Coral Police has made an arrest in yesterday’s hit-and-run crash that sent a young boy to the hospital.
Yesterday afternoon, officers responded to the 1100 block NE 9 Street for a hit and run crash where a black Kia Soul hit an 8-year-old boy riding a scooter. The Kia stopped, the driver got out and then fled the scene in the vehicle while a witnesses chased the Kia. After about 5 minutes of chasing, the witness lost the suspect vehicle.
The 8-year-old victim suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was trauma-alerted (as a precaution) to a local hospital. The boy suffered multiple injuries.
The investigation revealed that the 8-year-old boy and his 9-year-old sister were riding their separate scooters back and forth across the street between two driveways. The sister made it across when the victim rode directly into the front of the Kia SUV.
The investigator was able to get several interviews and collect physical evidence at the scene, including civilian dash-camera footage that captured the car fleeing the scene and driving recklessly.
Officers located the suspect vehicle dumped behind a nearby business. It was seized and processed for evidence. The investigator was able to direct patrol and traffic officers toward a home address and found the suspect, identified as Laura Wood, 30, of Cape Coral, making it back to her home.
The investigator placed Wood under arrest for hit and run causing serious bodily injury, two counts hit and run with property damage, driving while license suspended with knowledge, and reckless driving. She was transported to Lee County Jail.
