The next “Do The Right Thing” ceremony for May 2017 will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 at 2:00 pm in City Council Chambers. This ceremony is open to the public and we encourage our community to come out and show their support to these outstanding young men and women who “did the right thing.” CEO/President of the Cape Coral Community Foundation Michael Chatman will be the guest speaker.
Nine (9) Cape Coral students will be recognized.
Seth Denise – 9th Grade Mariner High School
Seth was eating breakfast in the cafeteria of Mariner High School. He noticed another student who appeared to be choking, immediately went over to the student and performed the Heimlich Maneuver, which dislodged the piece of food from the student’s throat.
Clayton Brookins- 7th Grade Oasis Middle School
Clayton and his friend Reagan were taking turns swimming underwater to see how far they could go. Clayton was observing Reagan swimming when he noticed his friend’s body language change. Clayton pulled Reagan out of the water and called for Reagan’s parents to come. It appears that Reagan had fainted in the pool. If it were not for Clayton, he may have drowned.
Jonathan Costa- 8th Grade Challenger Middle School
Jonathan is a Challenger Middle School student who mentors at Patriot Elementary. He assists a first grade teacher by setting up lunch in the cafeteria every day. He has great rapport with the first graders and is always helpful, kind and respectful.
Adella Eades – 8th Grade Mariner Middle School
Adella is an exemplary student who spends most of her free time tutoring other students and mentoring special needs children. She can often be found volunteering in the school lunch room and other areas of the school that need assistance.
Ayden Harvey – 4th Grade Home School
Lana Harvey – 5th Grade Home School
Ayden and Lana continually volunteer to make the community around them a better place. They can be found pulling weeds and mulching in several different yards belonging to elderly or temporarily disabled neighbors. They also help with several different Veteran organizations.
Jessica Montilla – 8th Grade Challenger Middle School
Jessica works hard on her studies, which is an extra struggle as she is just learning English. She continuously helps the teacher with another student who speaks no English. Jessica’s assistance to the teacher has been invaluable. She is always pleasant, positive, caring and compassionate.
Anthony Sierra-Cervantes– 6th Grade St. Andrew’s Catholic School
Anthony went to the school counselor because he was concerned about the welfare of a fellow classmate. He showed the counselor several email messages he had received from his friend. The emails clearly expressed thoughts of suicide. Anthony was instrumental in getting this student the help needed in dealing with a conflicted home environment. He is a true role model and a great friend.
Kayla Wilhelm – 11th grade Lee Virtual School
Kayla volunteers in a Pre–K ESE classroom with eight students at Tropic Isles Elementary. One day the teacher’s assistant felt ill and had to go home. This interruption in routine can become quite chaotic when dealing with three-year olds. Kayla took on the role of an assistant and worked with them while the teacher addressed the personal needs of one of the other students.
