This Saturday marks the annual celebration of Wreaths Across America, an event that remembers the fallen, honors those who serve, and teaches our children the value of freedom.
On Saturday, December 19 at 12:00 pm, Wreaths Across America will be at the US Coast Guard Station at 719 San Carlos Drive on Fort Myers Beach. The Coast Guard will remember and honor our veterans through the laying of remembrance wreaths on the symbolic watery grave of our country’s fallen heroes. They will also read the names of each and every veteran aloud.
SuEllen’s Floral Company has been a proud sponsor of this event for 10 years. They donate bio-degradable wreaths each year for the ceremony.
“My dad, Joe Fabbrini, passed away 10 years ago. He was Army Air Corp and his wishes were to be buried at sea. I contacted a couple who owned Rainbow Memorials and they took us 3 miles out to sea to spread his ashes,” SuEllen Fabbrini Hobel explained.
Rainbow Memorials’ owners Pat and Nancy McCarn later contacted SuEllen to see if she would participate in the Wreaths Across America Floating Flotilla.
“Of course, I said ‘absolutely!’ I dress up their bio-degradable wreaths with poinsettias and mums.” SuEllen and her husband Thomas also participate in the motorcade to Fort Myers Beach.
On Saturday, the Patriot Riders motorcycle club will meet at Horton Park on Everest Parkway in North Cape at 8 am. Then, along with a police escort, the group will caravan to the Coast Guard facility. Once there, the wreaths will be displayed on easels for viewing. A tribute to each branch of the military is celebrated.
There is a 21 gun salute, then the wreaths are loaded onto a Coast Guard Cutter which is then taken to an area designated for fallen and unknown veterans. The biodegradable wreaths are tossed into the Gulf of Mexico where they are then given another 21 gun salute. There will also be bagpipes playing a tribute.
SuEllen’s Floral Company also provides each motorcycle driver with ribbons for every bike participating in the motorcade.
“This year things are a little different due to covid, but we are still participating,” SuEllen stated. “It is a very emotional day for me because of my Dad and all those other brave military people out there.”
