A motorcyclist fled from an attempted traffic stop and right into a parking lot where other officers were on an unrelated matter and able to detain him.
On July 18th, 2019, at approximately 6:40 pm, a CCPD Traffic Unit officer attempted to stop a motorcyclist at the 700 block of NE Pine Island Road for passing cars on the right-hand shoulder of the road and at one point traveling 85MPH in a 55MPH zone. When the officer was able to pull in behind the motorcycle and attempt a traffic stop, the motorcyclist sped off westbound and again went onto the right-hand shoulder. Once near the intersection of SW Pine Island Road and Nicholas Parkway, the officer discontinued his attempt to stop the motorcycle due to its reckless actions and for the safety of other motorists.
The motorcyclist then turned into the parking lot of Walmart at 505 SW Pine Island Road, not knowing that another CCPD officer observed him pulling in, and yet another was working a retail theft in the same shopping plaza. The latter officer observed the motorcyclist park on the east side of Walmart, dismount and attempt to walk behind the shopping plaza. The officer approached, identified himself and detained the motorcyclist, identified as Austin Wong (W/M, DOB: 4-10-96). Once detained, Wong was found to have a stolen handgun in his waistband, and was also operating the unregistered motorcycle with a suspended license. Wong was charged with these traffic violations, for fleeing and eluding an officer, and for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. CCPD Property detectives also interviewed Wong in regards to the handgun’s status as stolen. Wong was transported to the Lee County Jail.
