A man was arrested after his anger over a damaged mailbox led to him firing shots at his neighbor.
On December 16, 2018, at around 7:15 p.m. Cape Coral Police patrol officers responded to the 1000 block of SE 13th Place. There was a report of a man in the street firing a shotgun.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with Luis Santiago (DOB: 3-26-89) who was standing in his driveway holding a handgun. Officers gave orders to Santiago, who dropped the weapon and surrendered.
Officers then made contact with a nearby neighbor who was determined to have been the subject with the shotgun. He stated he had arrived home with his girlfriend and, while retrieving items from his truck, had been confronted by Santiago over damage done to Santiago’s mailbox. A verbal altercation ensued, and Santiago began firing shots at the neighbor and his girlfriend. The neighbor, fearing for himself and his girlfriend, retrieved a shotgun and stated he began firing it into the air in an attempt to frighten Santiago off.
No one was injured during this incident. A Ping4alert was sent to alert citizens nearby regarding the increased police activity. Luis Santiago was placed under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was transported to the Lee County Jail.
