Recently, I wrote a collective review on the vegan restaurants located in the Cape, and one of them was Big Blue Brewing, located off Cape Coral Pkwy. Big Blue is a gastropub, which is a pub that specializes in high-quality food, and they succeed in their quest. Their food is deliciously and properly prepared, the service great and it has a leisurely atmosphere.
I previously reviewed their vegan menu which consisted of a lone vegan burger, and it was not something I’d ever order a second time. It fell apart when bitten into, was the size of two regular burgers and had no flavor. However, since I was there last, they have updated their menu, including their meatless burger which I went back to try. To my surprise, I absolutely loved it.
Instead of lentils and cauliflower, this new burger is made from potatoes, coconut fat, and wheat, and not only looks like meat, but tastes like it, too. The inside was even red like medium well beef. I’ve had a few vegan burgers over the years and this one is in the top ten, if not number one. Even my mother, hater of all things vegan, said it was delicious, and it’s a pain to get her to like anything not covered in cheese. A reasonably sized patty, not like the monster from before, on a red colored bun. Yes, red, and topped with a pineapple-mango salsa for a sweet tangy flavor that sounds strange, but goes well with the ensemble. Before I even bit into it I loved looking at that red bun. I’ve never seen one before.
I’m happy to say that Big Blue Brewing has moved up in the vegan world. Before I would have classified it as a great place to eat, but not ideal for vegans. Now I suggest that anyone, meat eater or herbivore, give it a try. The new burger is called the Impossible Burger and it’s rightly named for literally doing the impossible, making a non-meat burger not only edible but good. Praise the God of food!
