Quick Reads for June

The New Odyssey – Patrick Kingsley. The author follows & interviews several refugees from the Middle East during their attempts to immigrate illegally to Europe. He believes they are all innocent refugees & should be accepted by every country & provided with food, housing & healthcare. *

Glass House – Brian Alexander. Story about Lancaster, Ohio, with an Anchor Hocking glass plant as it’s major employer. It went from an All American city to a hell hole because of “financial engineering” by buyouts of Anchor, reducing wages over & over. Then drugs took a hold on the town. ***

Confidential Source Ninety Six – Roman Caribe/Robert Cea. A major trafficker in drugs flipped & worked with the government after being caught. He helped recover many millions of $$$ in cash & drugs along with arrests of many suppliers & dealers. interesting details of extreme dangers in both worlds. ****

Radical Origins – Dr. Azeem Ibrahim. The history of Islam & Muslims from the beginning to 2017. A good history showing how opposite the current Muslims are from the original covenants.****

Being Hindu – Hindol Sengupta. A look at being a Hindu in modern times. Makes some comparisons to other major religions & describes the very different concept of God in the Hindu faith. ***

Gorsuch – John Greenya. A biography about Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. A pretty positive look at his school records, friends & career. ***

Golden Days – Jack McCallum. This is all about the L.A. Lakers & Oakland Warriors. The central character is Jerry West & his influence on both teams. 5***** for basketball fans, but maybe only 2** for others. ***

Anesthesia – Kate Cole-Adams. An in-depth look at various forms of anesthesia & its effect on the brain. Quite interesting, but a tedious read about how our brains function. **

The Unwomanly Face of War – Svetlana Alexievich. An oral history of many Soviet women serving in their army in WW2 from nurses to snipers. ***

The Smear – Charyl Attkisson. About mostly political lies, accusations of all kinds against political opponents since the beginning of our country. Covering events starting with David Bork being selected for Supreme Court. It pretty much crucifies a lot of politicians, culminating with the Trump saga. ****
