Flooding forces detour along Burnt Store Road
As of 1:00pm, the flooding in Cape Coral has forced a detour along Burnt Store Rd. The runoff from the Yucca Pens has made the road impassable. Traffic is being directed to Old Burnt Store Rd. via Kismet and Durden. The road is expected to be closed for 24 to possibly 48 hours.
The intersection of Chiquita and Trafalgar remains closed. Chiquita from Cape Coral Parkway to Pine Island Rd. is suffering heavy flooding. It is advised that this road be avoided. Del Prado and Santa Barbara are the best options for travel north-south through the City at this time. It is also recommended that Gleason from Skyline to Santa Barbara be avoided due to the amount of water on the road.
As it continues to rain, flooding is expected to worsen. If driving is required, please stick to the main roads and avoid driving through standing water. It only takes 12 inches to float an average size car. Also, all of the water is causing potholes to form on some of the roads. As they are underwater, they will be hard to see and could cause damage to a vehicle if they are hit at a high speed.
Fire Chief/Director of Emergency Management Donald K. Cochran urges, “Please stay off the roads. Travel is very dangerous at this time. Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.”
