Junior ROTC Runners Make Donation to Local Police

The Fort Myers Police Department Cops & Joggers committee presented members of the Mariner High School JROTC program with an award. They were the fastest JROTC Team in the 11th Annual Cops & Joggers 5K Race held on October 13th, 2018.

At the same time, the cadets presented the Fort Myers Police Department’s Fallen Officer Memorial Foundation and the COACH program (Community Outreach Against Child Hunger) with a check for $1497.

The money was a compilation of donations from the JROTC programs from Mariner High School, Fort Myers High School, Riverdale High School, Cypress Lake High School and Lehigh Acres Senior High School.

Pictured with Fort Myers Police Lieutenant Jeffery Bernice are the top JROTC male and female runners: Cadet A. Sanders, top Female with a time of 24:26, and Cadet K. Griner, top Male with a time of 20:57.

This initiative was developed by LTC Donald L. Barnett, (retired US Army & Senior Army Instructor at Mariner High School.) He taught the cadets the role of law enforcement, along with a biography of Fallen FMPD Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller.

Lieutenant Bernice stated, “It is an honor to have such outstanding young men and women in our community that truly understand the fundamentals of leadership, teamwork and service.”  The donation will be split equally between the Memorial Foundation and the COACH program funds.
